How were the birds available for symbolic adoption chosen?
The birds chosen are ambassadors to the bird world. They are charismatic and inspire people to care about protecting birds and their habitats.
When I adopt, am I adopting an actual animal?
No. When you make a symbolic adoption, you are not adopting a real bird; however, your donation will further our work with that bird as well as our work on other birds and the habitat they need to survive.

What if I don't want the plush toy bird?
For any adoption, you can choose not to receive the bird plush. This will maximize the amount of your donation going to save birds and their habitats.
How will my gift recipient know the adoption is from me?
Once you click "Adopt Now" on the adoption of your choosing, you will be directed to an order customization page where you can select if this adoption is a gift or not. If you select "Yes, this is a gift" you will have the option to enter the gift recipients name below along with a personal message that will be included on the letter that accompanies the adoption kit. Once you click "Continue" you will be prompted to enter your billing information then the gift recipients shipping address so they can receive the gift directly. If you would like the gift to come directly to you, simply enter your mailing address in the gift recipients address field.
Can I personalize the letter and add a personal note to my gift recipient?
Yes, for any adoption you may add a gift note up to a maximum of 250 characters. Your gift note will appear at the bottom of the letter enclosed with your adoption. The letter will also include the gift givers name, gift recipients name and date of the adoption.
Can the Certificate to my gift recipient be personalized?
No, you cannot personalize your adoption certificate. But the certificate included in the adoption kit will be specific to the bird that you adopt. The certificate is two sided and includes a beautiful image of the bird chosen along with an adoption certificate of authenticity printed on the back.
I'm giving this adoption as a gift -- what will the gift recipient receive?
For every adoption gift given, the gift recipient (or gift purchasers if this isn't a gift) will receive:
- Adoption certificate and personalized letter from Audubon CEO, David Yarnold
- Lifelike bird plush that plays a recording of its song when squeezed
Is my adoption tax-deductible?
Yes. Your adoption is tax-deductible to the full extent allowable by law. Your receipt (on last page after completing order and by email) will indicate the amount of your donation that is tax-deductible.
How long will it take to receive my adoption package?
The estimated shipping time varies based on what shipping method you choose. We are happy to offer free shipping year round. Delivery time for free shipping ranges from 1-3 weeks.
During holiday periods, orders are shipped more frequently and require less time to arrive. The US Postal Service does not guarantee delivery times.
During holiday periods, express shipping is available for $30 per item. To take advantage of Audubon's express shipping offer, choose the express shipping option at checkout.

How will my adoption arrive?
If you opt to receive the plush, your adoption will arrive in a box with Audubon's logo printed on the side. If you opt to not receive the plush, your adoption certificate and letter will arrive in a white envelope.
Can I adopt at the last minute and receive my order the same day?
You will not receive your adoption kit right away, but you can access and send an ecard symbolizing your adoption and gift right away. On your receipt page after completing your order, there will be a link to access your ecard. You can find a link to the downloadable ecard on your receipt email as well on the receipt page. After personalizing the ecard, you can send it to your gift recipient.
Can I adopt more than one bird or gift at a time?
Yes! Just choose all the birds you'd like, then proceed to checkout where they will appear in your shopping cart.
